Description

This is a great 60 minute hands on activity to scaffold or reinforce NGSS ESS1.B: Model of the solar system can explain eclipses of the sun and the moon. Earth’s spin axis is fixed in direction over the short-term but tilted relative to its orbit around the sun.

Students start with the question, “What causes the phases of the moon and what is Moonlight?” Students then model the phases of the moon with a light source acting as the sun, a spherical object acting as the moon and their head represents the earth. As students make 45 degree turns, they can see the phases change on the spherical object/moon they are holding. It’s an excellent way to understand the cause and effect of why we have moon phases on Earth and observing the cyclical pattern of moon phases.

You can do this lesson all online, hard copies, or a combination of both.

This resource includes the following:

-10 slide Google Slideshow for teacher pacing, classroom management and key.

-Lunar and Solar Eclipse

-Cause and Effect

-Cyclical Patterns of moon phases

NGSS: Performance Expectation: Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons. MS-ESS1-1

ESS1.B:  Earth and the Solar System

· The solar system consists of the sun and a collection of objects, including planets, their moons, and asteroids that are held in orbit around the sun by its gravitational pull on them. (MS-ESS1-2), (MS-ESS1-3)

· This model of the solar system can explain eclipses of the sun and the moon. Earth’s spin axis is fixed in direction over the short-term but tilted relative to its orbit around the sun. The seasons are a result of that tilt and are caused by the differential intensity of sunlight on different areas of Earth across the year. (MS-ESS1-1)
