This activity will engage kids and you’ll be amazed at how interested and on task they are! It’s because every kid wants to know why the sky is blue! They also learn why sunsets are red as well! This activity hit’s the NGSS Performance Expectation “Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials MS-PS4-2.” Students first attempt to make two models. One of why the sky is blue and one model of why sunsets are red. Inquiry and tapping into prior knowledge is a very important part of NGSS and this does just that! It’s also for great metacognition! Students should not be frontloaded any information as to why the sky is blue or sunsets are red. However, my students do know what Wavelength, Frequency, Absorption, Reflection, Transmission and Refraction are. After watching 4 engaging YouTube clips, students are then able to revise their models accurately and know why the sky is blue and sunsets are red!!! This activity is 60-75 minutes.
