This is a perfect 30-90 minute hands on activity for NGSS ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System The seasons are a result of that tilt and are caused by the differential intensity of sunlight on different areas of Earth across the year. It’s packed with teacher notes & slides for classroom management and pacing. You can do this lesson all online, hard copies, or a combination of both.

Try NGSS ESS1.B Seasons PowerPoint & Interactive Worksheet Google Ready as a great review after your students complete this lesson!

What Students do:

1. Students predict Sun’s Change in Altitude over time.

2. Students calculate sun’s altitude or teacher provides link to the sun’s altitude.

3. Student’s watch and fill in guided questions for Bill Nye Seasons.

4. Students check how the sun’s altitude changed over the course of 30-90 minutes depending on time constraints.

5. Students graph the sun’s change in altitude.

6. Students revisit their prediction, answer questions and watch a TED Ed video.

This resource includes the following:

-10 slides of teacher notes, classroom management and pacing.

-3 page student hard copy option.

-6 slide virtual/distance learning option.

-Bill Nye Seasons guided questions

Concepts Included:

What Causes the Seasons

Seasons in Northern and Southern Hemispheres

Earth’s Rotation

Intensity of Sun’s Rays

Calculating & Graphing Sun’s Altitude

NGSS: ESS1.A: The Universe and Its Stars

i: Patterns of the apparent motion of the sun, the moon, and stars in the sky can be observed, described, predicted, and explained with models

ESS1.B: Earth and the Solar System: Earth’s spin axis is fixed in direction over the short-term but tilted relative to its orbit around the sun. The seasons are a result of that tilt and are caused by the differential intensity of sunlight on different areas of Earth across the year

Science and Engineering Practices:

-Developing and Using Models

-Obtaining, evaluating and communicating.
