If you are teaching how light behaves as it travels from one medium to another, this resource is perfect for you! This resource covers the Disciplinary Core idea PS4.B:  Electromagnetic RadiationWhen light shines on an object, it is reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through the object, depending on the object’s material and the frequency (color) of the light.(MS-PS4-2) A very important part of NGSS is doing activities that are phenomena driven, also known as discrepant events. When students do activities with very little prior knowledge the students WANT to know the answers and it fosters the metacognitive process. I tell them it’s ok they don’t know the answers in the beginning and that they will get a chance to learn about what the science is behind the phenomena they observe using the websites I provide. This activity is done on easy to follow, interactive Google Slides and should take students about one hour.

Here’s the activity in a nutshell:

-Students are shown light bending through various materials and asked why the light behaves this way.

-Students watch two videos and answer guided questions and interactive slides that help them understand the behavior of light in different mediums.

-Students then do PhET: Bending Light simulation along with questions and data collection.

-Students then go back to the original question, but this time they also apply the terms medium, refraction, index of refraction, density of mediums and speed of light waves.

• When light shines on an object, it is reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through the object, depending on the object’s material and the frequency (color) of the light. (MS-PS4-2)

• The path that light travels can be traced as straight lines, except at surfaces between different transparent materials (e.g., air and water, air and glass) where the light path bends. (MS-PS4-2)

• A wave model of light is useful for explaining brightness, color, and the frequency-dependent bending of light at a surface between media. (MS-PS4-2)
