This is a perfect 30-minute introductory scaffold, review or sub plan for PS1.A:  Structure and Properties of Matter: The amount (weight) of matter is conserved when it changes form, even in transitions in which it seems to vanish. (5-PS1-2) AND Measurements of a variety of properties can be used to identify materials. (Boundary: At this grade level, mass and weight are not distinguished, and no attempt is made to define the unseen particles or explain the atomic-scale mechanism of evaporation and condensation.) (5-PS1-3)
Students use the PowerPoint/Google Slideshow to help them fill in and answer the 3 slide Interactive Worksheet with an engaging video on chemical changes, conservation of mass and chemical properties.
You can do this lesson all online, hard copies, or a combination of both.
This resource includes the following:
-3 Slide interactive worksheet and key
-10 Google Slideshow that can be converted to a PowerPoint if preferred.
Concepts Included:
Chemical Reactions
Properties and Changes in Matter
Physical Change and Chemical
Evidence for Chemical Reactions
Conservation of Matter/Mass
NGSS: Performance Expectations
Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved. 5-PS1-2
Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. 5-PS1-3
Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances. 5-PS1-4
